Gopher Holes (Cole Martin)

Danny was out in the yard digging holes again. He dug about a hundred of them over the summer. One time I asked him why it was he was digging. He said you know why gophers dig holes? I said no and he said me neither. I suppose he was trying to find out why gophers dig holes by digging them himself. One time he dug a hole so deep I thought he fell clean through to the other side of the Earth. I looked down and it was dark and I said Danny you down there? He replied that he was and I asked him if he knew why gophers dig holes yet and he said not yet and I left him to it. He died young and we lowered him into a hole of his own and every time I see a gopher rear its head I wonder if it’s him come up to tell me to dig. I tried once or twice but I never found what it was Danny was looking for in the mud and I figured that was for the best. I reckon every man finds his own holes to dig and you dig and you dig in search of something buried until it kills you.
