Meat in my Teeth (Clem Flowers)

Brake lights turning to Marlboro 100s

I watch from the hill my heart

Disappear

Hunters used to say stags

Love the hunter who killed them

So I  promise-

the tears you saw from your rear view

Were tears of  Gratitude

Remembering

when you promised

We owned the candy coated kingdom beneath our two bedroom shaky slab of

homestead

While the sandpaper sun swam

To the bottom of the cacti

And you showed me your family recipe

For roasted red potatoes – the same dish I’m watching

Convalescence

Beneath my broiler light

While the rain just  screams

Outside
